HDR Photography – Peaceful Morning in Venice. Here’s a photo that I took in Venice, Italy! To capture this photo I had to really know my camera settings inside and out. I wanted the building across the water (The Chiesa di San Giorgio Maggiore) to look as large as possible. The key to achieving this type of shot is to stand far back and zoom in with a telephoto lens (I used my Sigma 70-200.) Unfortunately, the lens and my camera did not play well together in low light… I found the focus kept changing (causing blurry images) despite being in manual focus mode and using a tripod/remote. So, it was time for “plan B!” I switched out the Sigma telephoto lens to a Canon 24-105. Then I used APS-C mode on my Sony to crop the sensor and gain the extra zoom/distance. This made the building in the background appear as large as possible. Basically, you are trading megapixels for zoom capabilities. Check out the high-quality version here!

To capture this image, I used my Sony a7rii. I took three bracketed shots EV (-2, 0, +2) and combined them into Lightroom. Next, I used the Landscape Presets and brushes from the Creative Flow Lightroom Presets to bring out some subtle details. Finally, I combined the RAW file and my Lightroom version in Photoshop to finalize the shot.
